Moving
house tips plus helpful information on who to advise of your move.
Moving
house, congratulations that should mean you have sold.
Tips to make
moving house day as stress-free as possible.
1.
Give the removalist
as much notice as possible, particularly if you are moving during
the peak moving times of summer and the last week of the month.
When the sale of your
home has been finalized, immediately confirm your moving date.
2.
Did you know that if you do your
own packing, your removalist`s transit insurance may not cover any
damage.
3.
When
the removalist`s estimator is quoting the cost of your move,
be sure to cover everything that has to be moved; also advise
them of any potential problems at the other end such as access
into the house, steps, winding staircases or narrow streets.

4.
Check insurance
cover suggested by the removalist and ask if they think you
will need any additional insurance. Is it `new for old', or
reimbursement cover calculated on market value.
Usually,
transit insurance covers the gap between your home contents
cover in the house you are leaving and your new house, giving
you uninterrupted security - if, however, you are putting
goods into storage, a separate insurance policy is required.
5.
Ensure that you
fully understand your moving contract; check the costs, hourly rate,
how you will be charged, when the charges commence and finish and
how payment will be made.
6.
Pick up a `change of address' form
at the post office; this is effective for at least one month and
will allow you time to let family and friends know your new address. |

Arrange for gas, electricity
and phone to be switched off at your old house and turned on in
your name on the day you arrive at your new home.
7.
As soon as your moving date is confirmed,
start the clearing out and cleaning process; dispose of any unwanted
items before you move.
8.
Organize for the disposal of
garden chemicals, old paint, fuel and any other toxins.
Drain gas
cylinders and remove fuel from the lawnmower - the removalist
will be able to advise of any items they are unable to transport,
while the local council can provide information on the safe
disposal of chemicals and toxins.

9.
Have your removalist supply
you with packing cartons of various sizes and make sure you
have packaging tape, marking pens, bubble wrap and tissue
paper for delicate items.
Butchers
paper is cleaner to use for packing than newspaper.
10.
Always remember to pack by the room - its
much quicker and you will be better organized.
11.
Label all cartons on the top and on at least one
side, together with the room name in which those items are to be
placed. Mark `fragile' on cartons that contain your breakables.
|
12.
Leave some space at the top of each carton for cushioning;
avoid splitting cartons by not letting items protrude from the top
or bulge from the side.
13.
Better not to pack your cartons so
they are too heavy; for example with books. Leave things like mirrors
and paintings for the removalist to pack or take them in your car
if space permits.
14.
Disconnect the washing machine hoses,
empty and defrost the refrigerator and freezer the day before your
move.
15.
Make sure you prepare a survival
kit for the car as a precaution against not being able to unpack
fully before bedtime. This should include cups, plates, coffee,
sugar, milk, snacks, drinks, toilet paper, soap, hand-towel, rubbish
bags, torch, sheets, blankets and a change of clothes for each family
member.

16.
When moving
house plants, pack them in cardboard boxes the night before
the move; if possible, and with space permitting, transport
them in your car rather than the removalist van.
17.
When everything
has been packed into the removal van, secure and lock your
property then deliver the keys to your agent/realtor or leave
in a pre-arranged, safe location.
18.
When arriving
at your new home, inspect the property to ensure that all
things have been left exactly as agreed in your contract;
refer any discrepancies immediately to your lawyer. |
19.
Plan with the
removalist to have all your essential items unpacked first for example,
bathroom items/toiletries, kids toys.
20. Once
you are settled in and living in your new home, make sure to have
your address changed on such things as driver`s license, homeowners
insurance and car insurance; check all legal documents to ascertain
what needs to be updated or renewed.
